Jefferson Academy Secondary recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) tools can be useful for learning, thinking, and completing tasks when used responsibly. The goal of AI use is to help students learn, develop skills, and think critically, while keeping them actively involved in the work that builds understanding. How AI is used will depend on the assignment, course, and learning goals, and teachers will decide which uses are appropriate. In all cases, AI should support learning, not replace the essential thinking students need to do. The following framework explains different ways AI can be used and gives guidance for using it responsibly.
Core Philosophy
- 1. AI Should Help You Think, Not Think for You. AI is a tool, not a replacement. Its role is to support and enhance learning, never replace human interaction or independent thinking. The central question for every AI use decision is: "Who is doing the thinking?"
- 2. Human Connection Remains Central. Real learning happens through relationships, conversations, teamwork, and self-expression. AI cannot replicate the human and creative spirit. Teachers, students, and the relationships between them are irreplaceable.
- 3. Engage with AI Ethically, Inclusively, and with Integrity. AI must be used transparently, ethically, and for the benefit of all students. Users must verify accuracy and ensure AI supports rather than replaces their own thinking and creativity.
- 4. You Are 100% Responsible for Your Final Product. AI users are accountable for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of their work. Students own their submissions and accept responsibility for all content.
- 5. AI Should Be Used Safely and Securely. Confidential or personal data should never be entered into publicly available AI tools. Privacy and security are non-negotiable.
- 6. Stay Informed and Current. AI is evolving rapidly, requiring continuous learning and adaptation to prepare students for their future.
